How I Learned to use Children's Literature for Math
There are many books that are suitable for developing a lesson in math; however, content from literature should not be changed to fit a specific lesson. “Ideally, children’s literature books should have authentic context that includes life experiences, personal or cultural episodes, and enjoyable plots that unite mathematics and literacy” (Price, R.R. & Lennon, C. n.d., p. 1). During the instruction of mathematics, not only is it about memorizing formulas and rules, or just knowing what numbers to plug into the equation, but also it’s about having a full understanding of what mathematics is about. Critical thinking is involved in mathematics, as well as having a reason for the solution, making patterns, and knowing how to speak mathematics. With this being said, using literature will need to be chosen based on the lesson given as well as the students. “Literature shared in the mathematics classroom taps into the natural process of communication, not only improving students’ language skills but adding dimension and understanding to their mathematics skills…Once the right books have been selected, there are many ways in which this union of literature and mathematics benefit students” (Price, R.R. & Lennon, C., n.d., p. 2). Another way that mathematic skills can be improved is using literature in the home. It benefits children when parents involved them in daily life situations, like budgeting when shopping, comparing prices, measuring while cooking/baking, etc. “The child becomes more aware that mathematics is applicable to many activities in life” (Price, R.R. & Lennon, C., n.d., p. 4). As a teacher, there are ways to apply this to a classroom. First and foremost, the students should have a deep understanding of mathematical terminology, but also knowing how it works. One of the great ways of applying literature into the instruction is giving students connections to the problems. When they can apply it to their daily lives, it makes more sense to what they are solving. Applying art is a form of making mathematics fun. They can have fun while learning. It’s important to let parents know that their involvement is very beneficial to their child. Then giving them ideas of how they can help their child with real life situations. “Incorporating literature into mathematics instruction—either in the classroom or at home—enables students at all achievement levels to benefit from a richer and more complex understanding of mathematics” (Price, R.R. & Lennon, C., n.d., p. 5).

My experience with math literature
There are many ways to incorporate fun activities when doing a math lesson. In my opinion, the most important one would be to use children’s literature. Using literature in math not only builds students comprehension, but also gives them a full out understanding of how math works in real life situations. There are also great websites that involve both literature and math games that students can go on.
I have learned how using children’s literature in mathematical instructions can be very beneficial to a student. They have a deeper understanding of the mathematical world. They notice patterns that make sense to them, they know what numbers to plug into the equation, etc. When looking for a children book to incorporate into the lesson, it has to be enjoyable for students. It has to make sense when using it with a specific instruction, and it has to make sense in that the student will benefit from it.
I have never really thought about using literature in a math instruction. After doing this assignment, I have found great ideas to incorporate literature activities into my lesson. It deepens the students’ knowledge in mathematics. I also like the fact of how it enhances their communication skills. I definitely want to incorporate the fun books into my math lesson. Children can learn of how to use math in real world situations. I see it as preparing them for the next step in life.
This assignment connects with the knowledge I have from other education course I have taken. It has always been made a big deal of how using writing and reading should be incorporate in all subjects. They stress about how reading is great for getting the students to critically thinking and also build great communication skills. All courses have followed the common core standards, which is very important. They want lessons to be enjoyable so that they are easy to follow, and also having a blast while learning to keep them engaged.
I would definitely incorporate literature into my math instructions. I will always base my lesson plans with relevant information based on the common core standard. I will be sure to choose my books wisely. I will choose a book that will make sense with the lesson and a good learning experience for the students. I will base my lessons on real world situations, so that it’s clear to students and they will benefit from it.
