bats around the clock
Grade Level: First grade
Common Core: CCSS.Math.Content.1.MD.B.3 Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks
Materials: Bats Around the clock by Kathi Appelt book, Black Construction Paper, googly eyes, White Crayon, Print out of a bat, print out of an analog clock, scissors, glue, pencil
Lesson/Activity: Read Bats Around the Clock by Kathi Appelt at the carpet. Have students do an activity by making their own bat analog clock. They will trace the print out of the bat, using their crayon or pencil, on the black construction paper. They will cut along the lines, and glue the print out of the analog clock on the midsection of the bat. They will add their googly eyes or they can make their own using the white crayon. They will then draw/mark their favorite time of the day. Go back to the carpet and read Bats Around the Clock. For every hour have the students that selected that specific hour that is read in the book, stand on the side of the carpet, they can create their own little dance (add a little bit of liberal arts).
